Reference and Background Information

The GSLIS Reference Collection is a highly specialized, non-circulating, working collection of professional tools in the field of library and information science. The collection includes materials on libraries, acquisitions, selection, cataloging, administration, reference, information retrieval, database bibliographic searching, and the application of computers in libraries, among other subjects. There are encyclopedias, bibliographies, dictionaries and glossaries, indexes and abstracts, thesauri, yearbooks, manuals directories, and field studies among the collection. The following is a list of some important sources.

  • American Library Directory: A Classified List of Libraries in the United States and Canada, with Personnel and Statistical Data
    Level 1 Reference Z731 .A53 (current editions) and Level 1 Books Z731 .A53 (earlier editions)
    This comprehensive directory lists detailed contact information and profiles, including expenditures, facilities, and special services and collections, for over 37,000 libraries across the U.S. and Canada.

  • Directory of Special Libraries and Information Centers
    Level 1 Reference Z675.A2 D57 (current editions) and Level 1 Books Z675.A2 D57 (previous editions)
    This three-part set provides descriptive information and contact information for Special Libraries internationally. A subject index provided at the end of Part 3 classifies all libraries listed by principal topics covered in their holdings, arranged by state within each index entry.

  • Information Industry Directory
    Level 1 Reference Z674.3 .E52 (current editions) and Level 1 Books Z674.3 .E52 (previous editions)
    This directory provides an extensive, and said to be the most complete, list of the companies that provide services and products for the electronic information industry worldwide. Each entry includes contact information and a description of the services or products provided by the company.

  • Subject Directory of Special Libraries and Information Centers
    Level 1 Reference Z675.A2 S92 (current editions) and Level 1 Books Z675.A2 S92 (previous editions)
    This directory provides information about special libraries internationally, organized by type of library. The three volumes are divided by subject, and within each subject volumes are further subdivided by subject, and libraries are listed alphabetically. The subject index in the back lists libraries by state.

  • Advances in Librarianship

    Covering all segments of the profession, Advances in Librarianship is an annual review of recent developments in the field. The articles in each volume are written by experts, and the topics are selected from recently published literature and research in progress.

  • Annual Review of Information Science and Technology
    Level 1 Reference Z699.A1 A65
    Published yearly by the American Society for Information Science and Technology, the Annual Review provides authoritative and accessible articles on each years' trends in information science. Most recent years are kept in the Reference section; older volumes are available to be checked out.

  • The Bowker Annual of Library and Book Trade Information
    Level 1 Reference Z731 .A47 (recent editions) and Level 1 Books Z731 .A47 (previous editions)
    The Bowker Annual offers a great deal of current information about the whole range of librarianship, including national association reports, Federal agency reports, information about legislation and funding, LIS education, statistics and usage data, and reference information about the book trade. The last part contains a directory of library and book trade organizations in the US, Canada, and internationally.

Finding Articles

  • Current Awareness Abstracts of Library and Information Management Literature
    Level 1 Reference Z671 .C8
    This print resource includes indexing of articles about major library and information science management topics, including librarianship/information management, academic/non-academic libraries, records management/archives, serials management, indexing, web site searching/management, legislation, databases, publishing/book trade, financial management, organization and administration, service operations, buildings/equipment/furniture, image processing, communications, careers and, education. Simmons collection covers 1992- present.

  • LISTA
    Level G Periodicals Z699.A1 D6 and Simmons Eresource
    LISTA is a library science database with a large emphasis on technology and information sciences. Technology subjects include online information retrieval, electronic publishing, and information management, along with many others. LISTA indexes journal articles from more than 600 publications plus books, research reports, and conference proceedings. Whether you are interested in library science or computer science, it is a valuable tool.

  • Library Literature & Information Science Full Text

    This database focuses on trends in the library and information science field. It includes indexing and much full text of relevant English and foreign-language periodicals, selected state journals, conference proceedings, pamphlets, books, and library school theses, plus over 300 books per year.

  • Library and Information Science Abstracts (LISA)
    Level 1 Reference Z671 .L6 and Simmons Eresource
    LISA is a library and information science specific database that indexes over 440 periodicals from around the world in more than 20 different languages. It covers all areas of library and information science, including technology, library management, technical and public services, and book reviews.

  • Academic Search Complete
    Simmons Eresource
    Academic Search Complete is a great place to start your search for both popular and scholarly articles, no matter what your topic is! It contains journals from almost every topic and is designed specifically for academic institutions. It provides more than 5,300 full-text periodicals, 4,400 of which are peer-reviewed journals. This resource also features content as far back as 1865.

  • Academic Onefile
    Simmons Eresource
    Academic Onefile contains 8,000 academic journals, the majority in full-text, available in HTML and PDF formats. In addition it contains hundreds of podcasts and transcripts from NPR, CNN, and the CBC.

  • Expanded Academic ASAP

    From arts and the humanities to social sciences, science and technology, this database meets research needs across all academic disciplines. Access scholarly journals, news magazines, and newspapers - many with full text and images. Updated daily.

Searching the Web

Tips for Searching the Internet:

  • Use the advanced search function, which is available from most search engines:
  • Limit your search to .edu and .gov sites. These often provide quality research, statistics, and commentary. Sites ending in .org often have good information, too, but are likely to espouse a strong stance or bias on the issues they cover and may not be objective.
  • Try Scandoo, which presents search results from Google, Yahoo! Search, or Live (MSN) with an evaluation about the objectivity, credibility, and overall reliability of the site.

    RefWorks is a great program for organizing articles, books, and other materials you need for research. You can also use RefWorks to create bibliographies, create in text citations in your paper (Write-N-Cite), and share your research with others. Access RefWorks from the A-Z list of resources on the library's web page, and then follow the instructions to create your own username and password. We hold RefWorks Clinics throughout the semester.
