- ARTstor
Simmons Eresource
ARTstor is an online database of nearly one million images in the areas of art, architecture, the humanities, and social sciences with a set of tools to view, present, and manage images. It is also used by faculty in the Art Department who may create their own image collections and create presentations for class.
- The New York Public Library Picture Collection
Free Online
The NYPL Picture Collection Online presents more than 30,000 digitized images from books, magazines and newspapers as well as original photographs, prints and postcards, mostly created before 1923.
- The New York Public Library Digital Gallery

The NYPL Digital Gallery provides access to over 600,000 images digitized from primary sources and printed rarities in the collections of The New York Public Library, including illuminated manuscripts, historical maps, vintage posters, rare prints and photographs.
- The Library of Congress American Memory Project

The American Memory Project provides access to multimedia collections of digitized documents, photographs, recorded sound, moving pictures, and text from the Library's Americana collections.

This collection includes images from museums, universities and private collections throughout the world. The collection features images relating to cartography, fine arts, architecture and photography.
- Women and Social Movements in the United States 1600-2000

"This Worldwide Web site is intended to serve as a resource for students and scholars of U.S. history and U.S. women's history. Organized around the history of women in social movements in the U.S. between 1600 and 2000, the website seeks to advance scholarly debates and understanding at the same time that it makes the insights of women's history accessible to teachers and students at universities, colleges, and high schools." The site brings together books, images, documents, scholarly essays, commentaries, and bibliographies that document women’s reform activities.
Click on "Images" in the left-hand column for access to hundreds of images from 1760 - 2001, grouped by year.
- Encyclopaedia Britannica

This resource is an extremely useful encyclopedia that gives a valuable overview of almost any topic. There is a Year in Review section that covers the major events of different years.
Limit to "multimedia" in the advanced search screen to view images and other media files.
- Image Collection in Academic Search Complete
Simmons Eresource
Click "Images" on vertical menu bar to search the image collection in Academic Search Complete. This is a small collection of high-resolution images including photos of people, places, natural science, and historic subjects; as well as maps and flags.
- New York Times

The New York Times Historical database offers full-text and full-image articles from The New York Times. The collection includes digital reproductions of every page from every issue - cover to cover - in downloadable PDF files. Use the database to find not only news, editorials, letters to the editor, obituaries, and birth and marriage announcements but also historical photos, stock photos, and advertisements.

As both an art encyclopedia and an image database, Artcyclopedia offers overviews of artists and movements with links to online images. The collection is browsable by artist name, medium, subject, nationality and movement.

The Metropolitan Muesum of Art provides chronological, geographical, and thematic exploration of the history of art from around the world, with description and images in each entry.
- Grove Dictionary of Art Images Collection

Grove Art Online is pleased to direct you to a variety of excellent art image collections. Art Resource, Bridgeman Art Library and Art Image Links provide searchable image collections covering hundreds of areas in the visual arts.

Art Info allows you to search for art galleries by type of art or location of the gallery. You can limit your search to galleries with online inventories to view art of a particular type or time period.

The Web Gallery of Art is a virtual museum and searchable database of European painting and sculpture of the Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassicism and Romanticism periods (1100-1850). The collection is searchable by artist, title of work, time period, form and type. Some entries include picture commentaries and artist biographies.

As the oldest, continually operated auction house, Sotheby's holds auctions for important works of art. Their website includes images and descriptions of the items for sale and is useful for finding art images.

As a leading fine arts auction house, Christie's holds auctions for many different works of art. Their website includes images and descriptions of the items for sale and allows you to browse the artwork by sale categories.
